The Next Solar Boom, And How Solar Consultants Can Prepare For It

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)'s latest Short-Term Energy Outlook just came out, and there is good news for renewables.

According to the forecast, renewable energy sources will provide 22% of U.S. electricity generation in 2022 and 24% in 2023, up from 20% in 2021.

We looked into the data, and found that the specific expectations for solar are outstanding.

The numbers are inspiring on their own. We'll let them do the talking:

- The U.S. electric power sector added 13 GW of utility-scale solar PV capacity in 2021, and is predicted to add 20GW in 2022, and 24GW in 2023;

- An extra 31 billion kWh of electric power will be generated in 2022, and 41 billion kWh in 2023 [this excludes small-scale solar PV systems];

- Solar energy consumption in the residential sector was .329 Quadrillion BTU (quad) in 2021, and will increase to .404 quad in 2022, and then .482 in 2023;

- Small-scale solar electric generating capacity was 32,972 MW in 2021, and will increase to 39,825 MW in 2022, and then to 48,381 in 2023;

- Small-scale solar electricity generation was 49 billion kWh in 2021, and will increase to 60.3 billion kWh in 2022, and then to 72.8 billion in 2023.

There are even more such indicators in the forecast. Read it in full here.

If you're a solar sales rep reading this, you should feel very motivated right now. Your market has been growing steadily these past few years, and will grow even faster in the coming decade.

This means more work, more clients, more leads, more deals closed, and more profit.

And, most importantly, more people helped.

However, more work is not always easy to handle.

If you're ready for a bigger workload, that's great. But if you're not, you'll struggle. Worse yet, if you're really unprepared, your business can actually go down.

News like what we just read above makes it clear that the main challenge for solar sales won't be in trying to find work, but in learning to handle the ever-increasing work that there will be out there.
